TESSA

At the far end of Midbrook sat The Bon Bon Shoppe, an old-world bakery and sweet store residents had patronized for ages. Nobody alive could remember when it first opened, as the landmark had been around that long. Its current owner, one Angela Riojas, was the next person to question on Bridget and Tessa’s list.

There was some trepidation, deciding to head to the rival shop, for although the girls had no grudge with Angela, they knew bad blood still flowed, and it wasn’t about whose cream puffs were flakier.

“Should we? I mean, do we have to go?” asked a sheepish Tessa.

“We need answers and if we don’t go to the elders in town, who else will have those answers? We have to go.”

“Should I wear a Kevlar vest and helmet?” asked Creampuff.

“Do you have that gear?” asked an astonished Tessa.

“Well, as it turns out, yes, I do. The kit belonged to my cousin, Ed. He lived in Chicago for a time and got friendly with some ‘connected cats,’ if you know what I mean.” Creampuff put his paw to the side of his nose and winked. “Ed bequeathed me the get-up when his gang ‘hit the mattresses’ and they lost. Poor fur ball. He was cremated and his ashes scattered over Al Capone’s grave.”

“Nice. Way too much disturbing information, but nice. And no, I don’t think you have to storm the beaches today, Cream. Stand down. At ease, soldier.” Bridget tried to keep a stray face, but as soon as Creampuff saluted, that was it. Flip top head laughs all around.

With courage mustered and Creampuff safely inside Tessa’s carryall, the three left The Dark Bun and headed uptown, where the lanterns stopped shedding their warm light and the elm stands overshadowed everything in their gloomy wake.

The small brick structure had obviously been pretty in its heyday, but now was a vine-covered, bedraggled affair, its trim and stoop needing a fresh coat of paint… thirty years ago.

“Uh, guys, my sniffer is alarming. This place is officially creepy,” said Creampuff as she peeked her head out of the carryall. “And you peeps said I didn’t need a helmet.”

“No, it’s not creepy, Cream. It’s just in need of some TLC, is all,” said Tessa, looking around and trying not to show the fear she was feeling.

“TLC. Does that stand for The Lethal Cave?” said Bridget with a crooked smile and goosebumps taking over her skin.

“Ha. You’re so not funny. Come on, peeps, put your pleasant faces on. Assume all people you meet are nice… right up until they’re not. You know the old saying…”

“You catch more mice with cheese than with vinegar?” cooed Creampuff.

“Meh. Close enough. C’mon. Let’s go.”

And so, all three walked up the tiny cobblestone path to Angela’s shop door. Bridget turned the brass knob. The door was unlocked. They gingerly entered the dark foyer and entered a wondrous world beyond what they ever imagined could exist. Despite the bedraggled appearance on the outside, The Bon Bon was a veritable eternal
